Bresalú, Girona, Catalonien

The province of Girona, which is located in the region of Catalonia, is a favorite place for professional cyclists and if you cycle here there is a good chance of meeting them on the roads.

I chose to stay in Bresalú, a beautiful little medieval village in the northwestern part of Girona, close to some of Girona's fantastic climbs, five of which are described in the book 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs of Spain.

The town has a lovely campsite Camping de Besalú, where I spent 4 days in my camper. There are many permanent residents at the campsite. The pool was closed perhaps because of the time of year, I was here in October.

I managed to do three lovely rides, the first ride was to the area's most famous climb Rocacorba, a somewhat uneven climb without views or other attractions. Fortunately there is not much traffic, but great chances of meeting other cyclists, also pros.

At the top you will find some antennas and a nice view.

The highlight of the day was the town of Banyoles with the beautiful bathing lake Estany de Banyoles, here there are plenty of opportunities for a well-deserved lunch.

The second day we went to the Samtuari de la Mar de Déu del Mont, an absolutely fantastic place, where I felt like I was in an unreal place between heaven and earth, together with this calm man who seemed like he had been waiting for a visit for a long time.

Remember to get all the way up past the restaurant along the gravel road, where Jacint Verdaguer will be waiting for you.

On the last day I rode the Coll de Canes climb, an unusually smooth climb, something that is very unusual in Spain. The climb was nothing special and unfortunately there was no view or bar/restaurant at the top, but it was nice to have a 13 km smooth climb in good weather.

On the way home I visited the town of Castellfollit de la Roca which is located absolutely fantastically on a cliff side as the name suggests. I also met some beautiful goats.

I will definitely come back to this area and I look forward to greeting Jacint Verdaguer again.
